National research programme Artificial intelligence (PEPR IA)
As part of the French national strategy for artificial intelligence launched in 2018, following the recommendations of the Villani report, the PEPR Artificial Intelligence is part of the research strand to bring about disruptive technologies in the development and use of artificial intelligence.
At the heart of the scientific challenges of AI, PEPR AI aims to respond to the societal challenges of sustainability, ecological transition and technological sovereignty.

PEPR IA aims to structure research communities in order to launch stimulating scientific challenges and develop breakthrough technologies that will benefit all French players in the field.
Relying on some fifty research teams over 6 years, PEPR IA has set itself the following objectives:
- Lift the scientific barriers to frugal AI (in terms of energy efficiency and data efficiency), embedded AI, distributed AI and trusted AI (in terms of robustness, fairness, transparency and security);
- Building on the excellence of the French mathematics school to open up new horizons for the mathematical foundations of AI;
- Attracting AI research talent from all over the world;
- Pave the way for the involvement of French industry, and start-ups in particular, in the deployment of AI.
The first projects supported by the programme should lead to the recruitment of more than 150 PhD students and at least as many post-docs and engineers.
